Your visit to Ian Barwick, DMD will be filled with warmth and friendliness.

We know that one size does not fit all, especially when it comes to dentistry. We all have different dental needs, and we’ve all had different experiences in the dental chair.

We want to get to know you and your individual needs. We want to find out what you’d like to get out of your dental care plan. Maybe it’s simply routine cleanings, or maybe you’ve been putting off a procedure because you’ve dreaded the thought of visiting the dentist.

We’re in This Together

Rest assured, I am not going to tell you that you need to do anything, or need a certain type of care. I am here to be an advocate for good dentistry. I’ll make suggestions but, in the end, we’ll come to a decision together about what’s right for you.

Your first appointment will be about co-discovery – together, you and I will learn what makes sense for you and make decisions about how to move forward with the best possible care for you.

Preparing For Your Visit

Please bring the following to your appointment with you:

  • any recent X-rays you have in your possession
  • your completed health history form
  • a list of your medications
  • your insurance card
  • your sense of humor

Getting to Know You

It’s our policy to never do anything until we get to know you a bit. Dr. Barwick calls his first hour with a new patient “sacred time.” He spends it finding out about you, what you do, and about your concerns – all before anyone cleans your teeth or proposes any care. We realize that once you are leaning back in a chair you are in a vulnerable position, and we take the trust you place in our hands very seriously.

We’ll welcome you in and help you complete your health questionnaire. If you prefer, you can complete it online before you arrive. You’ll learn more about what to expect from your first appointment before sitting down for your exam.

“I typically spend an entire hour with a new patient.” This includes getting to know you and conducting a comprehensive exam. Dr. Barwick will:

  • Review your X-rays with you.
  • Assess the health of your teeth, your gums and your bite.
  • Do a thorough oral cancer screening.
  • Examine your head and neck, muscles and your range of motion.
  • Look for signs of Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) problems, including listening to your jaw joints with a stethoscope.

Altogether, this initial exam usually lasts about an hour.
“During the exam, I frequently use an intra-oral camera that allows you to see exactly what I see, so you actually have visual information you can use to make decisions about your care.”

With Your Comfort in Mind

Only after a complete and focused assessment, we will move forward with setting up a customized treatment plan, which will include an appointment with our hygienist for cleaning your teeth.

As we do this, your comfort is our top priority. To ensure that you feel safe we hold ourselves to these standards:

  • We won’t do anything until we’ve had a chance to get to know you. And we won’t tilt the chair back until you tell us you’re ready.
  • We work with a “rear delivery” system of care – all of our equipment is situated behind you, out of sight – nothing will hang over you.
  • If you’d like, we can give you a set of headphones and a CD player, or you can listen to your own music.
  • We use a “left hand signal” system to help ease patients’ nerves. At any time, all you have to do is raise your left hand, and everything will immediately stop.
